Mr. Dancealot
In the clip Mr. Dancealot, the students listened to the teacher talk about dancing and watched him demonstrate the dance moves. The students were not allowed to practice during class. The central message is that students have to practice what they are taught rather than the teacher just talking about the topic. Without practical application students will not understand nor be capable of doing to do the required task. When the clip showed the students, their notes were out and they were confused about what they were supposed to do and what type of song they were dancing to. The central message is a view that I strongly believe in because if there isn’t any practicing done then the information will not come naturally. Teachers can’t just lecture on topics that require physical practice and expect students to successfully replicate the material without practice.

Engaging
Roberts believes that teachers should incorporate
technology while keeping it relevant, challenging, and engaging. He sees
teaching as changing and believes teachers have to stay up to date with technology.
Roberts has a good grasp with what is happening in the teaching world today. I
also believe teachers have to incorporate technology and as an educator, I will
have to take course in technology throughout my career in order to keep up.
With this information, I can better assist students with their use of technology
both in and out of the classroom.
In The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler, the narrator discusses how students
use technology such as blogging, conducting research, and webcam interviews while
the teacher is still an important part of learning. This video better explains
why teachers are still needed even though students can use technology to learn.
People are continuously saying that teachers’ jobs are going to be taken over
by technology but how can that happen when students need a role model, someone
to teach them how to use technology to better assist them. This is a video I
would show other teachers’ who don’t know how they will fit in with the
development of technology.
In Harness Your Students’ Digital
Smart by Vicki Davis, the thesis is students are learning how to learn and teachers
don’t have to know everything, they can learn too. Davis’ argument is a fair
assessment of today’s world. Just because we graduate and become teachers doesn’t
mean that we stop learning. We are always going to learn something new and
sometimes we’re surprised from who we learn, such as our students.
In Who’s Ahead in the learning Race by Dr. Strange, the viewers are shown a comparison
between elementary, undergraduates, and graduates regarding the knowledge of
technology. Personally, elementary students are ahead in the learning race
because they are taught about the current information and technology while
older people have to learn it (which may take a while). As the worlds’
knowledge advances and makes strides, elementary students are taught the
information. I grew up learning Pluto was a planet but if you were to ask any
student today they will tell you Pluto is not a planet. Teachers will have to
go to staff developments or classes to be taught information and trained on
materials students may already know.
Flipping the Classroom informs
viewers about how the flipping the classroom works and the benefits. I have
never heard this method nor did I see it while I was completing my observation
hours. Flipping the classroom could work and allow for more complex thinking as
well as application of the information rather than using class time to teach
the concept. I would use this method in my classroom if possible because this
would allow students to think at a deeper level and participate in hands on
activities.
Bringing the Locker Room into the
Classroom by Craig N. Owens discusses how teamwork can assist students with
learning. When teaching, I could create engaging conversations where students
have to discuss with their team members. They wouldn’t be handed the answers
through lecture but rather teach each other and collaborate ideas. When they
collaborate ideas they are doing so much more! They are looking at other point
of views and analyzing them which create high level thinking and learning for
themselves.
"...that require physical practice and expect students to successfully replicate the material without practice. "
ReplyDeleteWhat learning does not require practice? I would argue that practice is required to learn anything!
"This is a video I would show other teachers’ who don’t know how they will fit in with the development of technology." Right. That's why I assigned it! :)
Thoughtful. Interesting. A different classroom awaits you than the one you had in school!
I love your comparison of learning that Pluto is a planet in years past but not in today's classrooms to learning advances in technology. With new information and new techniques, teachers will always be learning!
ReplyDeleteIn today's society I do believe that teachers must incorporate technology in the classroom. I totally disagree that technology will replace the teacher. Like you stated the students will need role models and they will need someone that will be able to assist them.
ReplyDelete"I also believe teachers have to incorporate technology and as an educator, I will have to take course in technology throughout my career in order to keep up." Have a mission to be a life long learner. Learn something new everyday and be open to allowing your students to teach you. You will be amazed at what you can learn from them.
